Cirva
Pharo
Twice a year, the Cirva workshop (The International Center for Research on Glass and Visual Arts) shuts down its furnaces for a period of leave or maintenance. The molten glass they contain must then be emptied. The Pharo candle holder is made on this occasion. This ritual prevents waste and makes the most of this very instantaneous creation process to produce an iconic object that identifies Cirva.
The number of annual pieces produced and the choice of colors depends solely on the workshop’s activity.
The glass is poured into the mold, and a steel lid is pressed onto the molten material. This creates the cavity for the candle. The excess glass resulting from this pressure (and the variations in filling due to pouring) forms a wave that laps the base of the candle, like the surf on a shoreline.
And the wax flickers.
